The Top 10 Things to Know When Selling Fancy Color Diamonds

01

Education is Key

Many people think white diamonds are the most valuable.  But a vivid or intense fancy colored diamond is more rare, more valuable, and widely considered more desirable than a white diamond. So, it’s critical that you take the time to educate your clients on the finer details of what makes a fancy color diamond such a unique opportunity.

02

Color Grading

White diamond color grading starts with colorless. D, E, and F. And as we work down the alphabet, increased nuances of color begin to appear.  With Fancy colored Diamond, the color is much more than a hint of color. And the more intense the color, the rarer the stone and the greater the value. The Gemological Institute of America grades fancy color like this:

  • Very Light (WX)
  • Light (YZ)
  • Fancy Light
  • Fancy
  • Fancy Intense
  • Fancy Deep
  • & Fancy Vivid
03

Rarity

While fancy color diamonds are highly sought-after, high-quality stones are rare. Only about one in 10,000 diamonds is a natural fancy-colored diamond, and only a fraction of those exhibit strong intense hues. The rarest and most valuable fancy color diamonds are classified as "Fancy Intense" or "Fancy Vivid," meaning they have a deep saturated color.

04

Color Diamond Composition

Diamonds are the hardest substance in the world comprised of pure carbon. However, traces of other elements on rare occasion will appear in a diamond during the crystallization process. For example Nitrogen will make a diamond appear yellow. Traces of boron, hydrogen and nickel can appear in other color diamonds.

05

Cut Enhances Color and Value

The cut of a fancy color diamond is different from that of a standard white diamond. While white diamonds are cut to maximize brilliance, fancy color diamonds are cut to enhance their color. Certain cuts, such as radiant and cushion cuts, help intensify the hue by reflecting light in a more intense way within the stone.

If a fancy color diamond is well-cut and showcases a strong color, you can expect higher ticket price.

06

Understanding "-ish"

When a fancy color diamond has “-ish” in its name, like "brownish pink" it means a secondary color is present in the stone. The "ish" color nomenclature helps determine a diamond’s actual hue, value, and appeal. The final color listed in the diamond’s name indicates dominance. For example, the final color listed is the primary color, while the “-ish” color that appears first, is the secondary color. A “greenish yellow” diamond is mainly yellow with the presence of green undertones, while a “yellowish green” is mostly green with the presence yellow undertones.

07

Use a white diamond to sell a fancy color diamond

That’s right. Always remember to hold a bright white diamond next to a fancy color diamond which will deeply immerse your client in the contrast, beauty and color intensity of the fancy color diamond.

08

Certification

Without certification, buyers may be skeptical about the authenticity and quality of their purchase. GIA, IGI, and other trusted grading organizations provide reputable and in-demand certificates. These can make all the difference in the sales process.

09

Natural vs. Treated vs.Lab-Grown

When your client is in the market for high quality natural diamonds, be sure there
is no confusion. Natural diamonds hold value and are not color treated. Lab grown diamonds are much less valuable and are not natural or rare. Color treated diamonds do not look real. Treated diamond will commonly lose color intensity over time and do not hold value.

10

Expression of Individuality

Jewelry is more than beauty and
value—it’s a reflection of a person’s identity. For most buyers, jewelry is a statement of individuality, celebration, and achievement. Listening to your client is key to understanding which fancy color diamond is the ideal expression of their story.

FANCY YELLOW DIAMONDS

Fancy yellow diamonds are among the most sought after and the most commonly available of the fancy colors found in Australia, Angola, Brazil, Congo, and Sierra Leone. Traces of nitrogen that appear in the formation of the diamond give yellow diamonds their color. For added warmth and depth of color, yellow diamonds are most often set in yellow gold jewelry or yellow prongs.

PINK DIAMONDS

1. Natural pink diamonds range from faint to fancy vivid. The more intense the color the more valuable the diamond.

2. Because natural pink diamonds are so rare, they are highly sought after by people who want to make a dramatic statement about their own personal taste and style. Pink Diamonds tend to be a celebrity favorite.

3. Natural pink diamonds are primarily sourced in Australia, South Africa, and Brazil.

4. Unlike other colors, natural pink diamonds are not colored due to elements in the stone but rather due to a slightly varied structure in the diamond’s crystal lattice

BLUE DIAMONDS

Blue diamonds are a symbol of Royalty and have been discovered in in South Africa, Australia and India. The blue hue appears due to traces of boron. Many blue diamonds exhibit blue fluorescence under UV light, which can make them appear even more vivid in certain lighting conditions.

GREEN DIAMONDS

Green diamonds are super rare and fascinating and have been discovered in Brazil, Africa, and India. Unlike other colored diamonds, the green color typically can only be seen on the surface, which requires expert cutting to preserve the green color. Some green diamonds also exhibit fluorescence under UV light.
